Portto – Temperature control unit for portable medical equipment
Medical ultrasound equipment must provide reliable performance in all environmental conditions. In Médecins Sans Frontières field missions, these devices are widely used for rapid and versatile diagnostics in resource-limited settings. However, in extreme climates above 40 °C, they suffer overheating, image degradation, system shutdowns and battery failure, reducing diagnostic performance.
This project presents a modular, portable active cooling system integrated into a backpack that becomes a deployable workstation. A thermoelectric Peltier module controlled by a custom PCB regulates cooling via PWM in real time, adapting to ambient conditions and preventing condensation via dew point.
